Zero Carbon Transport Pathways and Projects in Action to Reduce Emissions

Recent scenarios on the land transport sector’s role in meeting the Paris climate agreement goals of a 1.5-degree rise in temperatures show that the world needs to rapidly scale up electric vehicles while also shifting global vehicle travel from its current trend, particularly in the next ten years. The first part of this session will focus on understanding recent research on how much modal shift and electrification is needed and by when, and how to connect with health and equity in the transport-climate agenda. A second part of the session will then cover some of the challenges and achievements of various cities in implementing low carbon mobility solutions – and how such efforts are contributing to national level climate ambitions and health and equity goals. The session will present examples of urban transport decarbonization in action from global projects of the session hosts on e-mobility, walking and cycling, public transport, and urban freight. We will also explore where actions benefit each other, such as the electrification of public transport bus fleets joined together with efforts to increase ridership. The solutions presented are expected to inform how these and other actions can be scaled to meet climate, health and equity goals.

"Nexus Thinking for a Sustainable Mobility Transition" at Boysen- TU Dresden Summer School

The Boysen-TU Dresden-Summer School 2021, organised by Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) is held from 20 -21 July 2021. This year’s topic “Mobility in Transition” aims to raise awareness of the complex socio-technical nature of transport systems and the ongoing processes of change.
With mobility moving towards more sustainable solutions in the likes of electric vehicles, one primary challenge that arises is how we can manage a transition that is itself sustainable. On the one hand, we seek to achieve more sustainable modes of transportation. On the other, we speak of a major societal shift that would go beyond the technology perspective to cover behaviour change, potential environmental impacts, policy implications, and a transition that would take place in a world of various divides. With a little less than a decade to our deadline to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, how do we ensure that we not only get there but also get there in a sustainable way? Identifying various interlinkages – or nexuses – including the Resource Nexus can help us orient our efforts to reap co-benefits for the environment and beyond. Bringing together leading specialists from academia, the public and private sector, this session aims to explore these questions from perspectives cutting across the local and international levels, public and private sectors. Looking at what they mean to people, the planet, and profits, all in all, with a view to power a transition in mobility that is fair and sustainable.

The global learning programme is based on the SOLUTIONSplus project, which started this year and aims to set up a global platform for shared, public and commercial e-mobility solutions. With the learning programme, knowledge and practical expertise are provided to a broad audience - it is primarily designed for city and regional authorities, but any stakeholder involved or interested in e-mobility is more than welcome to join.
The first course consists of four thematic units: First, e-mobility is contextualised in the pursuit of decarbonising our transport systems. Secondly, a link between e-mobility and integrated planning is established. An overview of the e-mobility eco-system is presented and relevant sectors, stakeholder needs, as well as operator requirements, are mapped. Furthermore, students learn about good practice examples of policy measures and incentives to support the electrification of transport.
This way, the course serves to establish a general framework to be built upon in all upcoming courses.
In addition to lectures and material for self-study, a kick-off webinar gives key information and guidance about the learning programme and the SOLUTIONSplus project. Virtual exchange sessions are scheduled to accompany the course enabling interactive discussions with and among participants.
